1979 440 invader carb choke isuse?
« on: January 26, 2016, 05:57:57 PM »
Hello all. I've been having issues with my 79 440 invader. I bought the seld in sept of 2014 got it running and had no problems in 2014/2015 season though I didn't use it very much do to lack of snow. But now I get it out this year and this is what it does. I start it up and it runs and drive fine for the first 1/4 to 3/4 of a mile  then it loses power and won't rev beyond 4000 rmp which means it won't move. I thought it might me a choke isuse so I adjusted the chokes after that it gets power back and I'm able to drive home. I've done this about five times now and I've noticed that the chokes have not moved at all from where I've set them. So I don't know what to think and I don't know what else to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We had a similar problem with an Intruder.  I believe that it turned out to be a warped brake disk.  When it was cold it would spin free, but as it warmed up, the disk would stick and keep the sled from revving.

It is also possible that the carbs could have a problem with the "O" ring.  When the "O" rings leak the engine runs too rich and won't make revolutions.  My sense is that you should check the seal on the "O" rings first.
Intruders:  1978, 1979, 1981 Custom (Pink)
Invaders:   1980 440
Projects:    1981 Invader 440

Well I just pulled the bowls off the carbs and gas that came out was a blackish green color and full of dirt! It wasn't like that the last time I had the carbs apart but obviously this is a big problem. I don't check the "O" rings yet because I haven't goten the pin that holds the float lever out yet. I put a new gas tank on it summer and I thought it was clean but we will see in the morning. Or I guess the filter could be falling apart and have dirt come out of it. Hopefully this fixes the problem because this was starting seriously tick me off!

Dump your snowmobile fuel in your car at the end of the year.  Modern fuel.  Keep your carburetors clean and they are happy.

Snow is sure fun.

The O rings can be seen when the bowl is off.  The needle is under the float lever.

Well I think I've figured it out. The inline fuel filter wasn't pluged but had a massive amount of dirt in it hence why all the gas that came out of the carbs was black. All the gas in the tank was clean. I took it out and it ran OK but I think the chokes need to be reajusted because I messed with them so many times. Now I kinda feel like an idiot thinking had some major problem and it was just a fuel filter that I should have replaced when I bought the sled.

Dont screw around with tiny inline filters.  Use an automotive one ± 30ml big.
