broken recoil rope. Best way to replace?
« on: January 14, 2015, 12:33:38 PM »
I always seem to mess this up. This time, I will ask advice.

When I have done this in the past, and put the recoil back together, and install it, I always seem to break the part that holds the pawls, and the pawls fall out.

Is there a trick to replacing the rope, and not breaking anything?

I don't know which is worse, replacing the rope or replacing the track. But I can't say we have had anything break in the process.  There really shouldn't be any excessive force that should break any of the individual parts and pieces.

I think that it is unfortunate that the pawl assembly has to come apart to access the port for the rope knot, but that not withstanding, if you can take that assembly off and keep the spring from coming out, that is half the battle.

I will fish around to see if we have any better guidance than this.

Well if the spring goes "flying"  as happened to me last year.  I tried several times to just hold it and coil it around till it would be tight enough to fit into the housing.  That didn't work.  I ended up hammering two nails into a 2x4.  about 1 inch apart.  I trimmed their heads off.  I hooked the spring into one nail and wrapped the whole thing around itself.  Once it was ready to move to the housing I tied it together with tyraps.  Positioned the assembly in the housing and snip.  I put a face shield on, because I was scared.  I thought my helmet was overkill.  Hope you don't need this advise, but it worked great for me.

I'm wondering if what broke on Tin Man's recoil is the pieces around the pawls on the reel. I have seen a few of the cracked and bent. I doubt this happens when repairing a recoil.

Any ideas whey they crack and bend?

they crack out were the pawls rub if you jerk on the rope instead of engaging it then pulling
