Title: Gutting exhaust silencer
Post by: Flying Frenchman on January 19, 2016, 08:31:17 PM
Just wondering if there is a negative effect in gutting the silencer on 1981 440 invader. I know it would be simply for mental power, but it is a crowd pleaser

I've cut an old one before.  Don't waste your time.  It's just a noise maker! Belive or not but you will loose hp and end result is a worthless loud muffler!  In my experience it had no power and hardly moved lol.   Your call tho.  Kaw spent hrs getting that pipe tuned to run well as they did to the rest of the bike.   Leave alone imo

Kawasaki had the best of everything with these sleds, if they put into a manual you can trust it!!

Old thread bump...I want more info since it appears my muffler on the 1980 Invader 440 I recently purchased has been modified.
It has definitely been opened up and welded back up, gutted I suppose.
So what exactly is being removed and how much power loss was there?
Is it worthwhile opening it back up and trying to correct it or search for a new pipe /muffler??
I haven't really ridden the sled, it has a carb issue at the moment

The guy I purchased it from said he was told it was gutted at some point so I had a good look at it and can see all the new welding. It's on the loud side so I'd say it was done.
I've never heard of this and I used to race in the ice, grass drags (MSDRA) and I doubt it does anything for performance except save a small amount of weight.

I'd still like to know what's being removed inside, flat pieces of steel, cylindrical, any perforation in what's being removed? Anyone have any pix or make a sketch and post it would be appreciated.

Is the o.p still on here and did you go ahead with it?
