Hi
Started working on my Interceptor #65
It has Mikuni 38 carbs. The jets are really pitted. It has 270 main jets. the pilot jets can't be read. What should I start with for jets?
The clutch is really worn. I pulled it apart and there was only one of the 1/2 washers loose in the clutch. I assume that explains the wear. I'm also sure the spring and ramps are not correct. It had a White spring and E ramps.
What Spring and ramps work best? What ones will do in a pinch?
Thanks

No ideas on the carbs from the Interceptor crew?? :(
I will take a long shot....this is really a guess based on some estimations.
270 mains sound REALLY small, unless this Interceptor was running at 10,000 feet elevation. ;)...370's I would believe.
I have owned a Yamaha Vmax 540 for over 25 years.
Same engine displacement as a 'Ceptor.....very close HP numbers and power peak (8200) as the Kawi.....similar piston port cylinders...twin exhaust pipes.
It uses Mikuni Power (econo) Jet carbs, just like the Invader 440 and the Intruder, except the Vmax uses VM-38's.
Going by an old rule of thumb, if I were converting my Vmax from the Power Jet Mikuni to a regular Mikuni, I would add the size of the main jet and the power jet to estimate the size of the required main jet in a regular Mikuni. In the Vmax's case this would be a 290 main plus a 130 power jet, for a total of 420.
That may be a little big, but it sounds a lot more reasonable than 270 mains.
The Vmax uses 40 pilots....I would think that sounds close for your Interceptor.
Can you read the lettering on the needle jets and jet needles? I would think a needle in the 6DH10 range would be close.
This is just some wild guessing on my part, but man....I would be nervous trying to run that Interceptor with 270's. If it were me, I might start with 400's or 410's, ( unless your at some high altitude) and hope that I am a little on the rich side....and sneak down from there.
Are your Mikuni 38 carbs regular ones or Power Jet type? A 270 main with a 130-140 power jet would sound reasonable....I assumed they were regular Mikuni's. ???
I see you're in Ontario...very cold temps point to bigger jets....are you much above sea level, requiring leaner jetting?

There was once an Interceptor owner on here who put stock 4/6 carbs on his 550 and claimed it ran fine.

I can give what I know or at least it is in my computer and my 550 runs like a champ.
38mm gutted airbox
@5k elevation and 0° 250 dials on.
@10K elevation and 0° 220 dials on.
Some math work and you can get to your elevation and temp but gives you a better starting point.
Cannot recall the needle or jet needle but I do know it the jet needle was not a q-0 or any q for that matter. Not going to tear down for you but maybe after oval races next week. The pilot jet is likely 35. Throttle valve likely 2.0. Best guesses PJ or TV.

Thanks for the info and opinions!
The carbs I have seem to from a late 80's Yamaha exciter. They were power jet carbs but someone has soldered the nipples for the power jet line shut.
The oil pump doesn't have a cable to it . Has been running premix. Plugs and top of pistons are black.
The person I got the sled from bought it in New York State about 8 years ago. I think it has only done a couple laps around the house since it came to Ontario.
I was looking for different carbs, but these ones cleaned up pretty good.
rminier Thank for your input!
I would agree 270's seem small. I think I will try some 380 or 390's I would agree on the pilot being 40
Checkmarks
Thanks for your input. I certainly wouldn't expect you to pull a carb apart just to check jetting for me. But if you happen to have one apart I would appreciate you letting me know how it is jetted.
Thanks again.
Once I get it resealed and some jets ordered I'll let everyone know how it runs

Here is what I came up with but not from personal experience. VM38 carbs, pod filters 350 main jets, with air box 270 mains. 6DH7 needle, clip 4th from top, 247 Q-0 needle jet, 17.5 pilot jet. air screw 1.75 turns out.

well does it have an airbox or not, and does it have power jets..........

Mine has an air box but not powerjets
