Title: Splitting crankcase / Liquid Gasket Options
Post by: shizznats on December 19, 2012, 12:56:58 PM
Hi all - We decided we are going to do this rebuild right and we will be splitting the crankcase on the LTD motor as almost everyone here has suggested. A few quick questions about this. Is it possible to do without taking apart the top end? Also, when we are putting the crankcase back together, what liquid gasket options do we have? The manual calls for Kawasaki liquid gasket which I'm guessing may be hard to find nowadays. Some people have suggested Yamabond (though not sure what #) and a few other things... just thought I'd see what has worked for you guys. Thanks!

Edit: one more thing: where can we find o rings for the gearcase/coolant pump in case they need to be replaced?

Threebond 1194 is another version of the Yamabond, been using it on all my rebuilds.  I have it in my online store but I'm sure you can get it locally too.

I have used Permatex aviation sealer with great results, (it was available locally when I needed it) Also used Yamabond . The o-rings are usually in good shape unless someone smashed them during an installation.

The key is to make sure it is rated for gas immersion..

We will be splitting the case this week and I was just looking at the parts catalog for the engine and see that there is a crankcase coolant jacket gasket in there. Will I need to replace this gasket; if so where do I find one? Thanks!
