gas lines
« on: February 16, 2016, 12:23:43 PM »
Does anyone know the size of the gas line coming
up to the carbs, the one that feeds into the carbs. Inside and outside diameters. In need to replace one on my left side as it is leaking alittle. Tried a zip tie, but not working. Do these have any kind of clamp that is suppose to go on them?.   Thanks for any info   Doug

Buy some 7/32" inch fuel tubing for the Kawi's. The much more common 1/4" tube is a sloppy fit on the carb fittings. These sleds originally had the little spring type clamps on the fuel connections, but if you use 7/32" stuff it fits so tightly you hardly need a clamp. I usually stick the end of the hose in a glass of hot water to soften it up before sticking the hose on to the carb fitting, then it sticks like glue.
The 7/32" tubing is tougher to find, but it's worth it.

I use the larger stuff.  If you get the good quality stuff and put it on with a good zip tie it won't leak.  Once the line gets old and hardens, it can't be reused...

I have had very good luck using 1/4 inch black automotive fuel line.  Holds on tight, stays flexible no leaks. I have yet to clamp any of it with anything

So, gixxer6 you are saying stick with the 1/4" and not the 7/32" and find some clamps or use a zip tie.

I recently tried tygon lines which I bought at NAPA. They cost more $, and reviews said they hold up to ethanol gasoline. The 1/4 fit the carb nice, no clamp needed. The 1/8 was a tight fit, but made it for the power jet at carb bowl.

Parts book says 7/32 for the lines connected to the fuel pump.  7/32 should not need a clamp but 1/4 will.  I'm going thru this with my 81 Invader getting ready for Braapfest.  Cleaned carbs with new O-rings, all new gas lines, rebuilt fuel pump, new primer pump and the gas tank removed and cleaned.  I sure hope that is the not running so good issue.

I got my tubing from a local small engine place ( Boyd's Outdoor Power in Dresser WI )  They had all the correct sizes ( 3.5mm, 3/32,  7/32 and 1/4 ) but the Tygon is a bit expensive.

Is 7/32 the inside or is it the outside diameter ?

Use automotive thick black line for the impulse line.  Thin  wall fuel line absorbs some of the impulse and thus pumps less fuel.

Using the translucent line allows you to see if there are fuel pump or flooding problems by seeing fuel in the line.

I got a bunch of 7/32 tubing from Shadetree, it was a pink-ish color and it has worked well for years, no leaks, no clamps needed.
