Sabbattus Radar Runs in Febuary
« on: December 16, 2014, 06:04:41 AM »
Well, I promised you guys some videos of the Sabbattus Radar Runs (Vintage Shootout) this winter...

If mother nature doesn't start making ice I might have to run props.  Grrrrrr.  A few of the vintage sleds I was going to run are not going to be there, but we will still have a fleet to watch!  So far, this is the list of sleds going and running super!  I am excited...  not to mention very curious!

                                         82' Blizzard 9500    (440)   stock
                                         83' Blizzard 9700   (521)    stock
82' J/D Liquifire (Aaen prepped Invader heads)  compression 180 race fuel & TR800
                                         83' Interceptor   stock
                                         83' Vmax       stock
85' Formula (same motor as the 9700)   stock

A few sleds that might be going (if I can find time to get them ready)   78' Invader & 80' 4/6.  I might be forgetting something, but you get the idea.

Tory, when is this taking place? I'm looking forward to this, too. Kinda like the SnoGoer shoot-outs from back in the early 80's. Plenty of time to get cold, yet (I hope). When you first mentioned this a few months ago, you were going to have an Indy 600 in the mix, also. It must not be ready? Too bad, but a great group of musclesleds anyway!! 8)
75 SnoJet Astro SS, 79 Kawasaki Invader 440 (two of them), 81 Scorpion Sidewinder, 82 Blizzard 9500, 83 Yamaha Vmax 540, 97 MXZ 670....and holding...for now.

Hi Tory,

Wow....what a nice group of sleds you will have there.....i would put some money on the 9700 if it's running top notch...even if in my heart i'd love the Interceptor to take it all...  ;)

Do you have an address for this gathering, i will definitely try to make it if it's not too far...   :)

Take care

First week of Feb.  Sabbatus, Maine (near Lewiston).  1000ft on ice.  Last year there were over 100 sleds running.  Yamaha had demo rides for their new models... etc.  There wasn't too much vintage stuff, but I will make up for that this year!  I still have the Indy 600 and it runs great, but after about 10 minutes of riding it starts getting HOT.  I am a little concerned about it...  I've looked it over and I suspect maybe crank seals or an issue with the heat exchangers.  The 600 "Puuuuulllllsssss".  Maybe I'll just shut it down until I'am ready to run...  not sure yet.  The 9700 is a weapon, but it doesn't hook up well.  I've got 144 directional chisels and picks, but it still spins a bit off the line.  The Interceptor has the best holeshot of the bunch and getting a "jump" on the rest might make it a strong contender.  Honestly, this is gonna be really interesting.  Even the Liquifire pulls well with high compression heads (fresh motor).  I've had all these sleds out in our 12 acre field (track) and they ALL are FAST.  They each have their own flavor and would make anyone smile!
Just got my 81' Invader finished today...  had to take it out in the field for a few laps (in the rain).  Not much snow left.

Was that a typo or do you really have a 1983 Interceptor?

Hi Dan,   When we get a bit closer to race day (mid/late Jan), I'll get you some local motel suggestions.  Sabbatus is about an hour from my place, so not too familar with the bars in that area.  HOWEVER...  that doesn't mean we couldn't find one!  I am in!  I'll keep you posted.

on your indy 600 i doubt crank seals....imo water circulation.....some issues back then with air pockets....[last sleds we sold were polaris 1984/88 models]......all exchangers warm when hot? and thats a very nice line up of sleds, imo the 550 will do very well up to 88 mph, all its geared for.

Ya, I suspect heat exchangers or air in the system somewhere.  I don't know if I will have time to look at it.  Time will tell.  The 600 is geared "tall" from the factory and you can feel this in the midrange/topend pull.

All of the triples I have ever ridden all were strong in the midrange/topend.  I always assumed this was a trait of triples.  Twins are all more torquers with better low end (when compared to a similar triple anyway)

I looked up the stock gearing for the 83' 600 at one point and if my memory serves me right it was like 1.4 ish...  pretty tall. :o :o

when i had circulation issues i'd run it up a steep incline and stop halfway for 30/40 sec, turn around and face down for a while, repeat if needed, feel all exchangers for heat. might want to pick a bare spot, 600's are no fun stuck.

I checked the heat exchangers...   cold.  In fact, the hoses running to them didn't seem warm either.  Hmmmm.  Sticky thermostat?  Good advice Kawhead...
