Title: Invader Cooling Fan
Post by: mswyka on January 07, 2013, 02:20:34 PM
Paul's post about Invader temperatures has me curious whether or not anyone has had any success with a small electric fan to help keep the engine cool?

I had some from a tractor cab on the green sled i built but it did not work real well. I did buy a motor out of a 75 el tigre that had a liquifire 440 and used a LTD radiator with a fan from a motorcycle with temp switch on it.

There is certainly more room with the LTD radiator.  I guess I could go either way, we have enough 4/6 parts around here.  I guess my biggest question is where I can source an appropriately sized fan.

That is just what I was thinking. Computer  cooling fans are 12 volts.

Would they move enough air to do any good?

I would look for a fan from a motorcycle.  It would be better suited for the job than a computer fan.

What are you trying to accomplish?  The only reason I would install a fan is if I was doing ALOT of slow speed running and idling.  At high speeds the fan will only restrict air flow and hinder cooling.

My 81' Invader stays much cooler than my 79', if you have a 78-79 Invader, you may want to consider upgrading to the larger heat exchanger.

You hit the nail on the head.  Out east I don't have any place that I can open this sled up.  I guess that is why I like the 340 so much because it packs its fun into the low end of the range.  But because of the hills and turns we end up going too slow to keep everything cool on the 440 and, I am not quite ready to swap in a 4/6 radiator and hood.

Size is the key here, it would have to be a small fan from a motorcycle to fit on an Invader radiator. automotive cooling fans are usually 10" and bigger. Wouldn't take much air flow to help keep things cool.
