Title: Off season projects? What ya working on?
Post by: Interceptor398 on May 29, 2014, 09:36:49 PM
We are getting an outdoor boiler to heat the house and shop.  Switched from oil to propane just before a bad time ($6.90 a gallon LP) now the LP company says we did not use enough LP in the last 12 months. HELLOW, we shut off the furnace!!  Looks like time to buy the LP tanks so we control the propane story.  With the boiler it will be nice working on sleds for a good part of the year.  After a few days of warm weather I am ready for fall!!!! ;D

There's an offseason!? ;D I'm in the process of a total resto on my 80 Intruder. Didn't really need it, but I have a disease. Once I'm done with it I've got 3 Ski-Doo Citations to make into 2, and then try to get my 82 LTD running, and then a 72 Elan, and then 2 73 Elans. Not too much to do.  Lol

...  just about completed an 83' Blizzard 9700 resto...  just started on an 83' Yamaha Vmax (first year).  Working on getting the Sno Goer 82' & 83' Shootout sleds ready for the shows and the radars this fall/winter.  Still love my Kawis, but you know what they say...   you need twice as many projects as you will ever get to!

trying to get all the little projects done, snow blower that broke the gearbox is replaced with another one, had to swap motors, trailer done for smart car rally next week, ceiling fan installed, brakes fixed on Land Rover,Windows fixed on Land Rover, just got to get the combination windows on the back of the house and I can work on the 4/6 spark issue. Parts are sitting here waiting... and have to repair the cover for the sled too.

Oops, forgot the sled trailer needs a new deck to....

Jimvw57 - smart car rally?

I just moved, so at the moment there are sled parts all over the garage that need to be sorted/put away or scrapped.  I do have a work area setup though, so soon the Invader will be up to give the engine a once-over.

Heading out to Amana Iowa for the 2014 Midwest Smart Car Rally.. This will be the first one that I have not been directly involved with organizing so it will be like a vacation. So far there are 45 cars, and about 78 people signed up. Usually our Saturday drive stops traffic when people see a whole line of smart cars going down the road!

We got a new furnace last fall and Monday they finally came and hooked up the central air.  The hole for the heat exchanger for the outdoor boiler will maybe get done in September??  This heat system seems to be a long drawn out deal.  Garden got half in and now it's under water for the 4th time.  Been finding a few morels.

Wendy, myself and Wendy's dad went to the "Spooky Hollow Antique Engine Show"  north of Barron WI a couple weeks ago.  It is not a real large show but enough to spend the morning looking at stuff and the flea market.  When the did the tractor parade a steam engine goes buy with 2 men and 2 women on it.  As we are getting ready to leave here comes this engine with just the 2 girls driving and they are bring it to the sawmill to be parked and used for the mill power.  It for me was the fun part of the day.

Can you imagine how heavy the rear wheels are on that steam tractor.......insane..

Spent a little time replacing a leaking fuel bowl and rebuilding the carb on my Allis Chalmers "C" tractor. It has a belly mower under it and it gets used every time I mow the yard so it needs to keep going.  A few weeks back I put new seals in the front steering because the oil would leak out in a couple hours so I had to fill it every time I drove it. This yard equipment seems like most other mechanical things.  A little TLC is needed to keep them moving.

Turned out that the treads for the shut off on my new sediment bowl were taped so badly out of alignment the thing would not shut off the gas so I had to use the old body to get the thing to work.  The carb was off 4 times because it would not stop leaking.  I think the float is the wrong one for this carb.  Had to cheat the spec but it did stop leaking for now.

That is one beautiful Blizzard Tory 8)

I'm working on restoring a 1965 Oliver 770 tractor this summer :)

I should really finish my 69 Panther 372 JLO as well...I've had all the parts for years...just haven't finished it yet :-\

I'd also like to rebuild the rear diff in my 79 Trans Am. A friend happened to be driving by as I was having a friendly chat with Smokey! He was kind enough to snap a pic for me :P I did get off with a warning cause the trooper said he liked my car 8)

Nice car and tractor!  I have an Oliver 77 sitting out in the woods because it won't start.  We had a bald eagle nest next to it so I have been staying away until they fly away. Came close to buying a Trans Am back in 78.

Happy fathers day!!!  I get to spend the day with family and work on an Oliver 60 engine with the father in law.  My dad has been gone for many years now but I have many happy memories.

Hi all, My first post on this forum, glad to see there are some year around viewers here. From viewing posts I read many really dedicated and knowledgeable folks talking about there passion for Kawasaki's here. As far as summer projects I am in the middle of painting my boat trailer, but the rain is dragging that process out. But I am considering changing the gearing in my 78 440 Invader. I would like to improve the hole shot. Presently has stock 39 & 21 (1.86 ratio).

Question I have is: Do you have to use the original Kawasaki gears or is there a chance they are standard to another brand such as Cat, Doo or Polaris?

I would like to know this before I go gear shopping. I would  start with the 39 & 19 (2.05 ratio with red spring)

Has anyone else changed these gears?
Thanks, Doug

Hi Doug,  I have plenty of top and bottom gears...  I am sure I or someone else can set you up ;D

As you know, gearing is dependent on your intentions with the sled...  we all have our "opinions" lol...   1.86 is an excellent choice for trail riding.  Many "World Championship" drags have been won with a 1.86 ratio also.  I do have a spare 79' 340 Invader with it's stock gearing if you're looking for "experimentation" gearing.   ;)              Tory

Welcome to the site!!  340 Invader gearing is a good place to start for drag racing.

Thanks for the info guys. I just would like to play around a little with the gears to see the effects on the sled. So now it appears there is a good selection of Kawi. gears available so I don't have to consider interchangeability with another brand.

Can anyone check their parts for a 19 tooth and a red spring? This would make same ratio as a stock 340. I would like to start there.

My project is moving  :-\.  After collecting for the past 10 years I've amassed ALOT of parts.  They all need to be boxed up for the move within the next two weeks.  I've been working on boxing up my thousands of Kawi parts this past week, but have only made it through less than a quarter of them.  Wish me luck!

Thanks!  We're super excited...going from a 1000 sqft home with a small 2 car garage to a newer 2700 sqft house with a huge 3 car garage and a 28x32 pole barn.   I can't wait to fill it with Kawasaki's (don't tell my wife!).   ;D

That's really cool, you'll have plenty of room to breathe, not to mention all the space for vintage sleds and parts...!!!

Save all the Kawi's you can Gixxer6...!!!

I have been working up to get an outdoor boiler set up to heat this place.  As of today I "hope" most of that is behind me.  I lit the fire and everything is toasty tonight. I have a hanging heater aimed at the spot where something frozen would sit if it needed some heat.  This has been a "MAJOR" thorn in my side for the past year but it looks like it will turn out great. Vahooooo!!!!!!

Finally got a chance to work on my 76 KZ750 B.  Back brake was hanging up and the back wheel would start to bounce a little at 55mph.  Made it a little unpleasant to drive.  Rebuilt the rear brake and had the wheel balanced. Still need to do a road test but it stops fine and the brake lets go like it should.
