Title: Need a rebuild - Invader 440
Post by: Macs80hp440 on July 18, 2013, 08:33:30 PM
I have two 440 invader motors that I want to make into one good motor.  Both bore measure 68mm so I assume never been worked on yet.  I am thinking of 68.5mm with new pistons, rings, seals, gaskets, and such.  I do not anticipate bearing or crank trouble, but we can cross that bridge when we get to it.

Anyone want this job?  I want this job done by December.   I live in central Iowa, but travel along I-35 to north MN and NW WI often.  Also have friends in other areas that we can relay if need be to save shipping costs and such.

After finding out my options, if any, I may end up trying it local.  Either way the guy who does it will be my unknown to me...

Thanks for the consideration.  -Mac

Yep- I found that out since my post...uff-da.  So, the cylinders are lined, and only a light hone can be done, if anything.  At this point, I think I can handle the work with new rings.  Otherwise re-plating is expensive, right?

Do you have any tips or considerations for just new pistons and rings without bore over...?

i would only re-plate invader cylinders if you can't find good ones or yours are modified, in my opinion.  i got a complete running engine,  minus carbs and cdi for $115.

im sure someone here can help you out,  dont know if you got swap meets around your area.

Swap meets are a good place to find the stuff your looking for plus who know's what you will find the you never knew you needed.

Swap meets, huh?  I never thought of that.  I've been to some fisherman swap meets, and some antique markets, but never a "snowmobile" swap meet.  I know of some of the larger vintage events, I suppose they have "swap" opportunities at them...

Sounds like a great idea, and fun.  I live in central Iowa, and drive north into MN and NW WI a lot.

Been a while since I've been on here. Did you find someone to put an engine together for you? I am north of St. Paul about 35 miles right off of Hwy 35 and have a small shop in North Branch. Call me if you want to discuss options on what you need done.

Thanks for checking in on me.  It is nice to know a backup plan is available if I need it.  Even better that you are along my route to the cabin.

I'm goona give it a go on my own (with help from friends).  I got all I need in hand, now all I need is time.  Right now I'm in the middle of a siding project.  Then I'll get back to the 2nd Invader before winter.  But while I'm doing the siding project I'll keep looking for an LTD motor instead and sell the rebuilt Invader motor.  This site gave me good insight on how to make it fit.  We'll see how it plays out.
