79 drifter 440 bogging
« on: September 30, 2014, 04:20:37 PM »
hello, i got my drifter 440 at the beginning of last year. it ran great for a while then i noticed it started to bog, i think its a over heating isue. what happens is it runs great for about 20 minutes and then it just boggs. if i let it sit for a while it will run good agian and then bog again. ive cleaned the carb, fuel pump, replaced fuel lines put new spark plugs in it but they keep coming out burned on the left and fouled on the right. if anybody knows what my problem is i would love some help.
thanks.

 Have you checked the compression?

Do you know if or when the crank seals have been replaced?

It could be a number of things.

spark plugged burned on the right?  Right side when sitting on the seat?
What color is that plug? brown, tan, grey or white?

Any chance you can post a pic of the plugs?

Sounds like you do have a problem.

My number one rule is to find out if the problem is Fuel, Fire or compression.

I have a bunch of guesses but none of them will fix your ride.

If your spark plugs are doing their job when this bog is happening then you have a fuel problem.

If this bog is from a melted piston, well you just have a piston problem at the minimum.

Fuel problems, there are lots of them to just guess at and without new seals do not bother hunting down a culprit.

So confusing...  Where would I start now that is a question you can take to the bank.  I like to start with the spark plugs.  No not replace them yet.  Get a timing light, learn how to use it and then abandon its real use.  Hook up the light and just stare into the blue strobe.  When the sled is in the bog (running) is the light flashing steady or spotty with inconsistent strobes.  Now hook up the other spark plug and have another look.

This way you rule out a problem with the ignition system.

Now back to the seals or I mean fuel delivery problem.
