A tale of two suspensions
« on: January 25, 2014, 03:53:32 PM »
Here we sit - colder than cold but not enough snow to spin a track.  So it only seems natural that we put our time to good use and do some rebuilding.  The plan is to rebuild two suspensions and a pair of Intruder carbs and a pair of 340 Invader carbs.  The carbs seem to be no issue.  After taking apart a dozen or so there is a broken post here, a srtipped pilot jet there, a sheared powerjet fitting or primer fitting maybe - but when all is said and done there are enough good parts to get a few pair of good carbs.

Suspensions are another story.  Pulling four from the machine shed a casual inspection says that they look sort of OK.  They come from a 79 340, a 80 Intruder, a 80 340 which by the way still had the original cross-bar track, and a 82 that was run hard and put away wet.  Well, you guessed it, on the front swing arm assembly, if the front shaft was free the back one was frozen and if the back shaft was free there was no movement in the front.  And this was the way it went - not a cooperative part in the bunch.  This rebuild may take longer than expected.
Intruders:  1978, 1979, 1981 Custom (Pink)
Invaders:   1980 440
Projects:    1981 Invader 440

Ah yes... The wonderful world of vintage sleds! If it was easy, everyone would do it

Seems suspensions are always a surprise. Some look good and are hard to fix, some look ugly and there is little wrong with them
