Coil replacement question on an '80 Drifter 340
« on: November 27, 2014, 10:35:21 AM »
Ok folks, I have not been around here in a while, but need some help with a no spark situation. Went to put the Drifter away last spring and I could not get it to start ... had no spark. And of course I did not mess with it all summer, LOL.

I need to run some diagnostics on the pulsar, exciter coils and think I have found suitable replacements for those (if needed). Looking at the ignitor/CDI combo ... was this the only model & year to use that part#??  Looks like the part number was 21119-3006, which might have been superseded by 21119-3012.

Anyone have a line on a used one, know of a JD or AC cross reference, or any other options?

Thanks - Ed

Is this the Drifter F/A?  If so it makes perfect sense that it would share a CDI with the JD 80+ Spitfire/Snowfire, that CDI is P/N AM55106.

If it's the fan version it could be AM55540, that was used on some (but not all) JD Trailfires that share that engine.

Nope an '80 340 fan (I put it in the title, I should have put that in the message as well). I think this was a one year wonder as well. Right now my head is spinning from looking at parts books

The '80 340 (fan and free air) both used a coil with an integral CDI unit. The fan and free air each used a diff part number (maybe a diff in advance curve?). Part #21119-3006 for the Fan, #21119-3005 for the FA.
The '80 440 used separate coil and CDI unit, similar to the Invaders and most intruders.

'79 440 Drifter used separate Coil & CDI.
'79 340 Drifter still used points.

'81 Drifters (340 & 440) used an integral CDI and Coil ... Diff part number from the '80 340 fan or FA. PN# 21119-3012

It looks like the '81 Intruders to an integral coil/CDI PN#21119-3012 Same as the Drifter that year.

In a couple of the parts books I have, there is also PN#21119-3022 and 3024 handwritten in.

Is this the Drifter F/A?  If so it makes perfect sense that it would share a CDI with the JD 80+ Spitfire/Snowfire, that CDI is P/N AM55106.

You may be on to something Matt, the AM55540 pn does cross to the Kawi #21119-3024 that is hand written in one of the parts books I have downloaded. I have not seen this actually printed in any Kawi parts books. That is also the only Kawi part number I have listed, that shows up in my Kawi to JD part # cross reference.

Interesting enough, I believe all the sleds (Kawi's at least) using the integral coil/cdi also used the same pulsar and exciter coils (maybe others did as well).

I guess the question in my mind now is ... were all these part numbers an improvement on the prior part number? Or were there differences that were sled specific?

Just a little update. I drug the sled up to the house today. Low and behold it had spark ... appeared a little weak, but it was there. Started up fine.

I'll do some checking on the exciter coil with an ohm meter. Depending on what I find, maybe try and pick up a NOS one. Hopefully, I won't have to try and see if one of the other coil/cdi numbers will work.

I would guess that the combo unit was more economical, since it was on the economy sleds.
