1980 Drifter F/A with a mod 80' SRX Motor
« on: June 18, 2014, 04:11:56 PM »
Hi guys...  o.k. I know I am brave soul posting this one on here, but I haven't seen much posted in KTrax lately.  Thought I'd get some excitement brewing.  I picked up a 2nd F/A Drifter w/a blown motor - the rest of the sled is nice.  I ALSO picked up an 80' SRX that needed a track and had some tunnel damage.  I bet you can guess what the plan is.  Yep, taking out that 28 hp 340 F/A and installing the 80' SRX 440.  I will be using all piping/exchanger/rad ect. and transplanting.  I love the look of the F/A just wanted to give it a little kick in the pants.  The idea is to keep EVERYTHING under the hood with no cutting.  I am using a rad from a liquid Eltigre and mounting under the front bumper similar to the Merc Sno Pros.  The mod 80' motor should be somewhere around 85 hp.  Nothing too radical - but an extra 50 + horses should wake her up.  The idea here is to keep the sled looking bone stock except for the radiator location.

A Yamaha motor in a Kawi.  What an insult!   :)  Sounds like a fun project.    I've always liked the look of the FA Drifters.  However if it were me, I'd use an Invader engine.

I hope the Drifter frame doesn't twist with all the extra ponies.

Sounds like a great idea. Are you just going to run a radiator or radiator plus exchangers?

Holy Smokes! This sounds pretty awesome. What will you call it? It will either be the best deep snow SRX in existence, or the fastest Kawi Drifter. Win/win either way. Might even give your beautifully restored Blizzard 9700 a run for it's money. May need to add a "indy" car wing to it, though to hold it down.
75 SnoJet Astro SS, 79 Kawasaki Invader 440 (two of them), 81 Scorpion Sidewinder, 82 Blizzard 9500, 83 Yamaha Vmax 540, 97 MXZ 670....and holding...for now.

Many years ago a Yami in a Kawi is some of what you could get at a Kawi dealer.

Going to use the heat exchanger from the SRX (under the seat).  Not worried about twisting the subframe.  Maybe 120 horse, but not 85.  If you've ever seen the front end (bulkhead) of a liquid Twister...  the Drifter is a heavy piece of armor.  Drifter even has a steel bellypan...   good for welding a bracket for the radiator.  I am sure I will have to do some fabricating along the way, but that's what makes it fun!  If it was easy everyone would be doing it!  I've wanted to do this for quite some time...  finally got all the parts I need.  Will keep you posted on the progress and pics.
