Steering arm play
« on: January 04, 2018, 07:48:12 PM »
Is there a quick and dirty fix out there for steering arm play?

Looks like alot of play in the splines.

Our annual cheap sled challenge is coming up and the circuit race is my event and the sled doesn't turn left very well at the moment.

There is a fair amount of play built into the steering system new from the factory.  Looks like you have all of it.

My first guess is the bushings in the ski saddle.  It does not take much wear to make them too loose.

Is the play in the spindle? or between the handle bars and the spindle?  On the 78 & 79 sleds, the lower steering shaft bracket has a tendency to wiggle a bit and can get sloppy.

Last year we lost one of the steering spindle bushings resulting in sloppy steering.

Most of the play is on the left side in the splines.

I pulled the skis off to install spreaders.   lots of play in the spindle sleeves too.  MIssed on gixxers replacements.  looks like they're getting 10mm bolts instead of 3/8.  :)
