imo mag seal....at idle [on pto cyl] pull up on the choke cable right at the suspect carb/cyl,applying verry light momentary choke, a rpm reaction up or down indicates a fuel/seal problem.over the years i drifted a lot of seals in on kaws, kohlers, etc, but as the motor is out to do the mag side its way better to just split the case on a vader/truder because of the pto seal.    imo

Crank seals do not affect compression. The only way to properly do crank seals is to split the bottom case. If you don't, you will shear off the rib on the outside of the seal and it will leak. Also gives you a chance to clean off the case mating surfaces and seal them as they could leak there as well.

You do not have to remove the cylinders or the top end when doing crank seals.

as you described, it could be a coil issue. Been there!!

A bad crack seal shouldn't affect compression...

Try switching plug wires from side to side and see if the side that's firing changes.

A compression test only tells the condition of the rings and cylinder. I've pretty much eliminated spark and fuel (switched plugs and carbs) problem still exists on the mag side.
Guess I'm just going to run it like I stole it till my gasket kit gets here.
