Title: Lights not working - need help
Post by: hj1515 on January 28, 2018, 08:53:24 PM
Hi guys .. need some help!

I have a 1980 340 invader… The headlight, gauge lights and rear taillight do not work. The brake light works and the machine runs great. Does anybody have any suggestions as to why the lights do not work? I was told there is a wire harness that runs underneath the motor to the headlight which often breaks, but it is not only the headlight that is not working so I assume it might be something different

Any help is greatly appreciated .. thanks guys

Check all the connections first.

Maybe your bulbs?  If the voltage regulator quit working, all bulbs will blow at high RPM, all except the brake light...

Ok thanks .. will look into them

Connections seem to be good

Could a bad voltage regulator be an issue also? How do I test? I am not an electrical guy
Lol

 Good points already mentioned above.
One more likely problem is the key switch.
Your brake light bulb always gets Voltage, because it always has to work.
All of the other lights depend on the position of your key in the switch....you can have the ignition on, and no lights, in one position of the key.
Or, turn the key one more spot and the ignition and all other lights come on.
The key switch is somewhat of a hassle to get to, but it may have failed, or the connections are crappy.
Pull the plastic wire terminal off of the back of the key switch and shine up the terminals (once you get stuff out of the way to access it)
It may be as simple as that.

Thanks

Yeah I was curious about the key switch  as well .. saw that as a apoaible issue when looking at the shop manual.

Thanks for the info ..

Just curious .. where is the voltage regulator if I do need to replace .. seems like it is hiding somewhere lol

Voltage regulator is under the radiator housing on the inside of the right side of the bulkhead just slightly behind the engine.  Trace the wires from the engine connector over to the bulkhead.
