Title: Just picked up a 440 Invader
Post by: Metalman on December 29, 2012, 03:40:22 PM
Just picked up a 440 Invader. I managed to get the Invader, a new 78 Intruder hood still wrapped in the original plastic, some skis and wear bars for $450.00.
The Invader is in pretty good shape, runs well and just needs the primer fixed and some new slides.

nice find

The 78"s were the best looking Intruders. That hood should be worth some bucks

The Invader runs really nice! Put all new fuel lines on today and fixed the primer as it looked like an Exxon spill under there when I put gas in it. Starts on one pull, no bog or idling issues. Needs a few minor maintenance issues fixed
Think I will tear it down next weekend and put some seals in it and maybe get rid of this grouser bar track and put one of the rubber ones on it. Should probably put the 81 suspension I have on it while I'm at it.  :)

When you change to the rubber track, you do have to change to the 4 wheels across the rear idler shaft. They are a touch bigger. otherwise you will never get the track adjusted right. Been there!!

Also, balancing the carbs makes a big difference too.

The 81 suspension on the Invaders is about the same as the 78..

The 81 Invader rear skid is completely different than the 78'.  The 81' has a Vari Ride, which has a much better ride than the 78-80's.

Not necessarily, my 82 has a "Vari-ride" sticker on it but has the same suspension as the earlier Invader.  There is not an easy way to put a Vari-ride suspension in place of a standard Invader suspension. Spring adjustment 'hooks' would have to be added to the tunnel.

I bet that 82 was an Intruder....You are correct, 82 Intruders had standard skids with a Vari ride sticker.  But 81' Invaders have true Vari Rides in them.  At least every 81 Invader that I have ever seen.
