Title: Is it a 1980 Intruder?
Post by: 58Evinrude on February 05, 2014, 05:29:41 PM
I'm getting confused about the engine in my sled. It has a build date of 09/79, so I assumed that it was a 1980, and the yard that sold it to me said it was an 80. Looking into the specs, I see that the 80 Intruders had standard electric start.. not on mine. They had dual carbs... not on mine. I can't find the holes where the oil injection lines would go into the case. The engine numbers on the fan housing agree with the 1980 numbers, but that's all.

So what the hell do I really have for an engine? All I can figure is it's a 440, single carb, non oil injected. Well, it has a 440 fan housing on it, so maybe it's not really a 440 either? I guess I'll have to wait until it's out to find the case numbers, and see what it really is.

Hmmm.. how about it being a Drifter 440 engine? Single carb, no oil injection.

Any chance you can post a pic of the engine?

The motor should have a tag on the recoil side just above the recoil on the housing the recoil mounts to.  Sounds like a Drifter motor.

This is the only pic of it I have. I don't have the numbers here, but I did check them, they match 1980 440 Intruder numbers. But, those numbers are on the fan housing, so they really don't mean much if the case has been changed

 Thanks for posting the pic.

Drifter engine's and Intruder engines are very similar.

How is the engine mounted at the clutch end?

I could be an Intruder engine with Drifter cylinders and intake manifold.

If it is a Drifter motor, what's the difference? Single vs twin carbs, no oil injection I know, is there anything different internally? As for the mount, I don't know. I haven't taken the clutch off yet, I'm waiting on a puller to come. And the sled is 100 miles from me now.

An 81 Drifter about the only difference is the cylinders.

80 and older Drifters have a different crankcase , crankshaft and  cylinders.

The heads and pistons are the same.

81 Drifters had oil injection, earlier ones did not.

I just  reread your other post about the sled.

I bet it is an Intruder engine with Drifter cylinders on it.

 Bolt on change.

OK, but what about the oil injection ports on the Intruder crankcase.. weren't there 2 of them on the intake side? I can't find any on my motor....

The injection ports are in the cylinders, not the crankcase.

To change it back to an Intruder you will need to change the cylinders.

Unfortunately it is easier to show you the differences than explain them.

Drifter cylinders have left's and right's.  Intruder cylinders will fit on both sides.  The intake is the main difference.

I guess that explains why I couldn't find the injection ports... some one told me that they were in the crankcase. Thanks, one less thing to look for.

invaders have 1 oil port in the c case, intruders don't.has to be an intruder c case[or 1 drifter?}to have the end mount on the pto for the dough nut style engine mount

Did you ever get figured out what engine you have in there for sure?

No, I never had time this weekend to get into it. I was out all day Sat on a ride on my boating buddys :), and Sunday my Yammi quit. I did pull the Kawi over a few times, nothing, then I primed the hell out of it, choked it, and got a couple of coughs out of the engine.
