Will any other clutch puller work for the stock 1979 Invader 340 primary clutch?
-
All Intruders, Invaders & Interceptors use the same puller. The Drifters and those with the Arctic Hex clutch are not the same. Tory

Problem I have is that I have to remove clutch to tilt motor to remove water pump. Do not have access to Kawasaki puller. A friend of mine has a 1974 or 1976 John Deere Liquifire. I am not sure of the year from memory. Would have to call him.
Does the Liquifire use the same puller?
-
Spoke to my friend. He said that the his Liquifire has a Comet clutch.
-
Yes, the Liquifire uses the same clutch (Comet 102C). The 80-84 Liquifire engine are the same as the Invader just different heads and exhaust. You can get a clutch puller on ebay for less than $20. Tory

The Kawasaki clutches are a far different animal than the Comet clutches John Deere used on Liquifires and others in their "Fire" series. As far as I know, only the specific puller designed for the Kawasaki clutches will work on them. The Comet puller won't work on a Kawasaki clutch. I admit I haven't tried it, but I have both and they are dimensionally a lot different. You really should get one...you will need it sooner or later. They are available from many suppliers, but I bet Tory is correct about eBay being perhaps the cheapest source.

The puller for the Kawi clutches will ALSO work on the Comets for the Liquifires and 102's on Kawis. The threads are the same... I wanted to confirm this, so I just went out to check.
Side note.... I have found that the aftermarket pullers are fairly short. I usually cut a two inch piece of round stock (same diameter as the puller tip) and feed into the "hole" before threading the puller. This will bring the puller head further away from the belly pan so as not to damage the pan when you give the puller a good WHACK!! Tory

Dang, now I'm thoroughly confused. I' m looking at the Comet puller and I'm pretty sure it's 3/4 - 16 thread. Aren't Kawis metric? Mine sure looks smaller. There is a puller for the unusual metric comet that Yamaha used as original equipment for the mid 80's SRV and Vmax. I dunno. Tory, I know you have a Liquifire... :o
-
I don't mean to confuse... maybe I am confused... lol. The comet 102 used on the 81 srx is the same part number as the 102's for Kawis (also 80-84 Liquifires). I threaded my Kawi puller into three Comet 102's I had on the floor and also an original Kawi clutch. One of the 102's I tried was pulled off an Interceptor. I can't imagine the threads were different on any 102's used in newer Yamahas. I've always used my kawi pulller to pull 102's! The only difference is the threads start further in the bore of the original Kawi clutch than the 102.

According to the Royal Distributing catalog
Kawasaki clutch 9/16" 18nf
Comet clutch prior to 95 3/4" 16nf
Comet clutch after 95 5/8" 18nf
some late model Ski-Doo clutch pullers are 9/16" fine.
You can always get a 9/16 fine thread bolt and fill the clutch with oil, water or grease and screw the bolt in

Well... that doesn't make any sense!!! Oh well... gonna keep using my Kawi puller for my Kawi 102's. No problems so far.

A friend of mine had an extra clutch puller at his house. I tried it threads were perfect and it was the correct length. Pulled the clutch no problem.
-
Glad you got it off

I needed to pull a 102 yesterday, and have both Comet and Kawasaki pullers. The Kawasaki kindof fits and even threads in, but it's not right. I would think using it could screw up the threads.
