Hey guys, anyone have a NOS or a for sure good used voltage regulator for a 1980 Intruder?
-
Without electric start they can be purchased new. With electric start they are a little more difficult to come by.
-
Yup...looking for an electric start one.

Not sure if this would work....maybe?

Just ordered it :) Thanks again!!

Yep, that looks good. I will mention a couple things that you have probably already thought of. If so, my apologies.
You mentioned over on Vintagesleds you didn't want to hack up your sleds wiring harness....understandable. You could take your original, bad rectifier/regulator and cut the wires back from it's plug, and splice the new one into those wires. That way it would plug into the stock plug coming from the motor.
I took a peek at the '80 Intruder wiring diagram. It shows an in-line fuse in the wire going to the battery positive terminal. I think that would be a good thing to keep in place, if this replacement your getting doesn't have the fuse. It should work great without the fuse.....until...
If the rectifier part ever failed in the future, the fuse would blow when the rectifier fails to convert AC voltage to DC voltage.
If the regulator portion ever failed in the future, the fuse would blow when you started getting 18-20 Volts from the lighting coil, rather than the proper "regulated" 13 or 13.5 Volts.
It's not the end of the world if the regulator fails and you blow a light bulb or two, but it would suck to send too high voltage to the expensive battery and boil all of the acid out of it.
Let us know if this replacement works...might be helpful to know for those that have electric start Kawis. 8)....Rick

Thanks Rick! Yes that was my plan to cut the plug off my old regulator/rectifier and solder it on to the new one. That way I will still have my fuse holder going to the battery and all of my original wiring :) I'll let you know how it works when I get it done.

That looks very promising. Please let us know how it works.

Hey guys! I haven't forgotten about you, just been busy with summer projects. Still haven't installed the voltage regulator yet. But I promise I will and I will let you all know how it works!

Well I finally got around to installing the new reg./ rectifier and it works perfectly!! I cut the connector off of my original reg./ rectifier and soldered and heat shrunk it to the new one. So anyone looking for a replacement for electric start models this is an exact fit!! Thanks for the help!! 8)

Cool! Glad that worked... 8)

Excellent information. Thank you.
