So Im 21 and have a couple invaders. I heard you can put a comet 102c clutch on and change the spring to a different colored one for speed (both are racers). Is there any truth to this? If so which color spring am I looking for and what weights do I use? Thanks
-
You can use different springs, and the Comet clutch has more options easily available, the Stock kawi setup is good for most trail riding, racing is another thing entirely! I will leave that up to those with more experience in clutching for racing.

The best setup I found for drag racing, is doing the Aaen mods to the stock Invader primary with E ramps. Then adjust the spring and weights to get desired max RPM. This made my Invader a blast to ride across an open field or lake, but wasn't much fun on the trail.

Okay, I have the aaen pipes for it, where do i get the E ramps for the clutch? or did they come stock
-
I'm not sure what all models came with the E's, but I know 79' 440 Invaders have them.
-
I have a set of good used, ported (very nice work) invader cyl's that have been Nicasiled. Stock bore. Used with Aaen pipes. My 81' pulled like an SRX at 9100 rpms. ;D PM me if interested. Tory

Which spring is the best all around spring for the stock Kawi clutch? And which weights does the 4/6 clutch suppose to have, as in grams?
-
The 4/6 came with F ramps and a black spring. For best all around I suggest sticking with stock. I prefer the stock yellow spring in my 440 Invader, but alot of guys prefer the white or black spring.

Okay, what about for a 340?
-
Same, but with less washers on the ramps.

There is a LOT to consider when using a Comet clutch on the Kawis.
The Kawasakis are slight "oddballs" in one area. The clutches have a .200 inch negative taper.
By far, the vast majority of sleds used a zero taper, or commonly called a flush mount clutch....where the taper of the inner surface of the clutch began exactly the same as the taper on the crankshaft.
I know this because another of my sleds, my 83 Vmax, is another oddball with a negative .140 inch taper.
Comet clutches are excellent, but they are subject to wear like any other brand.
If you buy a used Comet that was originally designed for a Cat, a Doo, Polaris, etc. it is very likely to be one with zero offset, or "flush mount".
This means it will sit .200 inches closer to the Kawasaki engine than the stock clutch, or the proper Comet replacement clutch....nearly a quarter of an inch.
I think that might get a "common, zero offset" Comet clutch REALLY close to the frame rail, and you would run out of room to move the secondary clutch in closer to the centerline of the sled to ever get the clutches properly aligned.
But, I haven't tried a flush mount Comet....maybe someone on here has and can verify it works.
There is a Comet clutch available....part # 208306...or 208306A....available from Dennis Kirk, inc, or MFGSupply, (and probably lots more places) that has the absolute proper -.200 negative taper.
It comes calibrated for a 440 Invader, with a yellow spring and B-1 cam arms.
If you look at MFGSupply website you can enter any sled....the same clutch could be used on the 80 LTD 4/6 substituting a purple spring and HE-4 cam arms....or an 81-82 LTD by using a black spring and F2 cam arms.....but.....
You're looking at around 325 bucks for a brand new Comet...plus the cost of the spring and cam arms..I'm sure it would work wonderfully, although the spring and cam arm recommendations may not be absolutely perfect for all conditions.
Just some things I have learned over the years dealing with the kinda unusual offset of the Kawasaki and 83 Yamaha Vmax clutches.

I don't use any of the recommended parts that's recommended for the clutch. I Send the clutch out to get balanced and I reefer to clutch weight and clutch spring rate. The Aaen clutching book is a good reference depending on what your revving your engine at. Yes the offset clutch is recommended for clearance, if your clutch is not balanced you will wreck your engine
