Title: A Year Without Snow
Post by: mswyka on February 14, 2016, 12:56:00 PM
Folks:

Good afternoon.  Today's arctic blast has me cooped up inside.  But temperature aside I am not sure it makes much difference since we have no snow.  So far this season we have had only one measurable storm dropping about 5 inches that lasted for one day.  I have seen bad years - there was one just a few years back where we had two storms that gave us a total of 4 days of snow for the entire season and the other year where snow fell on Christmas and was washed away on New Years!  But, unless we get another storm or two, this will be the worst winter for snow in my history.

Last weekend I drove all the way to the top of NY and with the exception for just a few inches of "spring like" conditions in the Adirondacks, there wasn't any appreciable snow to be had anywhere.

Our trails were open for less than 2 weeks.  They are closed now and the forecast is 30's all week and maybe a 40's and rain for Friday.  I'm a little nervous about the snow conditions for Braapfest!

We got a late start, but now have 20+ inches on the ground.  The issue we keep having is the high temps.  We're in that crazy cycle where it'll be cold for a week then warm for a few days.  So we only get to ride every other weekend.   :(  But at least we've got snow!   8)

Same kind of conditions out here in Mass.  We will get enough to ride and the next week it will warm up and melt some , but not all of it.

All that knuckle busting I did over the summer and rushing to get a couple last minute details worked out before the season began was for nothing... :-\ I about to take them out on a cold day when the ground is hard just to see how they run.

Here in SW Quebec there were never good riding conditions. When we did get any snow, it came with howling winds so all it did was fill the ditches and corners of the fields, then the next day it would rain. Saw a couple of guys out in desperation, but it must've been horrible riding. Any trail over a plowed farm field was mostly dirt. First winter I've never been able to ride. (don't have a trailer, but I'm thinking that's the next purchase/fabrication)

As long as you have some grass you can still play a little,  I've been to several grass drags over the years!!

With the frost out of the ground, the return of the robins, peepers out, and the closing of that one pesky door that refuses to close all winter - I am declaring winter over and have put all the sleds to rest for the summer.  After taking a few weeks off, it will be time to get the boats out.

Got 3 days of riding in.  2 up on Tug Hill, and 1 in Central PA.  Both trips the trails were beat, because everyone else was out too.  That's the way it goes.

If not for Braapfest my sleds would not have left the yard.
