Title: What are LTD440 sprockets made of?
Post by: shizznats on April 04, 2013, 11:03:12 PM
What are the chaincase sprockets on the LTD440 made of? I needed to weld one today so I degreased it, but it was not welding well at all... it released a lot of what looked like oil when I tried to weld it. Is it stainless steel? Oil impregnated perhaps? What is the best way to weld to a material like this? Thanks!

The steel is hardened.  If you heat the gear to a cherry red and allow to air cool it will soften the steel.  On a down side you will need to take it to a professional to have it re-hardened.

Why are you trying to weld it?

Much easyer and cheaper to find a used one.

Well I'm actually using a used LTD sprocket that I have for another project I'm working on. I need to weld the LTD sprocket to a sprocket made of carbon steel. The reason I want to do this is to take advantage of the splines on the LTD sprocket.

Any suggestions for MIG welding this hardened steel of the LTD sprocket to a carbon steel? Thanks!

Check with BillyG.  I think that he did something similar to make a 40 tooth Interceptor gear.
