Title: Need Some Steering Help
Post by: mswyka on November 30, 2013, 06:34:17 PM
We are putting this 81 LTD chassis back together and the steering is not doing what it should.  Assembled as it currently is, the handlebars are cocked to the right about 20 degrees.  Skis sit straight and parallel.  Left steering arm is about 20 degrees left and right steering arm is about 20 degrees right.

Steering shaft came out of this chassis and I was pretty sure that the ski spindles also came out of this chassis, but now I am not so sure.  The two ended steering arm on the right ski is correct number for 81.  I have no numbers on the other parts.

Mark, Try flipping the dual arm (the part shown in your first pick) over...

Tom, I can try.  I picked that orientation because of the location of the double spline.  I went through the machine shed checking out the other sleds and found it interesting that we seem to have multiple set-ups relative to steering arm alignment and push rod length.  Though all of my short push rods seem to be the same length - and most with one or more broken end.

according to my 81 vader the arms are in the correct position... i think you're a spline off, easy to do even with the blind double keyway......

Tom, good call on swapping that bell crank end for end.  I also had the 78/79 aluminum bar in the front.  The newer steering arm is much lighter.
