I purchased another Kawasaki ('80 440 Invader) and I have a extra vari-ride from a parted out '81 laying around......I will go thru this machine before putting it to snow and debating about the upgrade. This machine will probably be a weekend warrior for me - not a daily driver - just had the parts to complete it and didn't want it to go to waste.
#1 is it worth it - does it improve the ride that much?
#2 what all needs to be changed - track, cogs & suspension
#3 what am I missing - I always miss something
Thanks:

Installing a Vari-ride is quite a bit of work. you will need to add the adjustable brackets for the rear springs, and the support that goes across the bottom of the tunnel. It can be done and will give you a better ride.

The tracks and drive axle are the same. I have 79' and 81' Invaders, and the ride on the 81 is noticeably better. I have a gas shock on mine and it rides very nice. If I were in your situation, and was planning on putting some trail miles on the sled, I would make the swap. I also recommend upgrading the track at the same time. I put a 1" camoplast hacksaw on my 81', by far the best mod I have ever done to a Kawasaki.
