Title: Take a good look at your stock Interceptor pipes... or are they???
Post by: Tory944 on January 28, 2014, 06:30:13 AM
How do you know the pipes you are running on your Interceptor are "NOT" 81-82 LTD pipes????????

I'd love to hear from the Interceptor gang on this one...  Gixxer (check out your PM).  Thanks guys!

Do both the LTD pipes and Interceptor pipes have "four" spring mounting tabs (manifolds to pipe)?  I have two sets of pipes that "look like" Interceptor pipes, but they only have "two" spring tabs.  It looks like the pipe mount looks a little different.  Any pipe diameter differences?  Thanks.

I think these are the dimensions that you need to look at...

Anyone have both LTD and Interceptor pipes that could measure them?

no. 387 has 3 spring tabs per pipe....if the pipes don't have a ball and socket joint and use a pipe in a pipe set up they're invader pipes from the h p kit

That is a good point...   I do see a measurement difference (now that you mention this).  I will compare my LTD pipes to Interceptor and let you know what I find.  Any thoughts on those spring tabs?  I know my 4/6 pipes only have two spring tabs, but all these sets of pipes laying around had come from either Interceptors or 81-2 LTD's.  I am not trying to make a BIG deal out of this, but I don't want to be running 440 pipes on an Interceptor.

Well, I have six sets of pipes...  they all are "socket joint design."  Two sets have only "two" spring tabs and the other four sets have "three tabs" as Kawhead mentioned.  I measured all six sets (measurement Gixxer pointed out) and they are ALL 3" +/-.  I even measured the set on my Interceptor rider...  same deal.  So, there must be another measurement or visual that I am missing.  I "highly doubt" that all of these pipes are LTD.  I do need your help guys, I am at a loss here.  Trucker sent some pics, but maybe could point out something I am missing.  Maybe Kawasaki couldn't be bothered manufacturing specific pipes for their limited build Interceptors??  I've heard of crazier things.  Many thanks.

Kawasaki produced 4 different sets of twin pipes:
81-82 LTD = 3 spring tabs per pipe
80 4/6 = 2 spring tabs per pipe
82 Interceptor = 3 spring tabs per pipe
Git Kit Invader twin pipes =  2 spring tabs per pipe

All are ball and socket except the Git Kit pipes use a sleeve style coupler.

The 81-82 LTD pipes have different part numbers than the Interceptor pipes.  This along with the picture posted suggests that they are different.

Hi guys,

This is what i've got on 2 sets of  550 pipes which are definitely oem original pipes..

The outer pipe (near the body) has a short silencer (2.5 inches) but a long tailpipe (3.5 inches)....measurements taken from the rear of the pipes..

The inner pipe has a long silencer(3.25 inches) but a short tailpipe (2.75 inches).

They have 3 spring tabs.....and the outer pipe has 087 stamped in the front attachment tab and 086 stamped in the rear attachment tab..

I have another set of pipes which ''i think'' are ltd but can't confirm and it has 118 stamped on the attachment tab...

I hope this helps... ..Take care..

Pictures that were posted were taken by Pat Kolenko.  He no longer is a K-Trax viewer - moved on to other things.  I did talk with him on the phone.  LTD "pipe" length and diameters are the "same".  The only difference is the outlet tube angle/length and Interceptor has a different baffle configuration in the silencer(s).  If anyone remembers Pat from the old days you know you can take what he says to the bank.  Nice guy and VERY knowledgeable.  So, if you can't find a set of pipes for your Interceptor, I wouldn't throw those LTD pipes in the scrap pile...  a few minor tip/silencer alterations and you've got yourself a set of pipes.

I've dealt with Pat before, and you are correct he does know his Kawis!  Did he mention anything about the placement of the convergent cone?

Did you determine what pipes you have?

Hi Tory,

Thanks for the info from Pat Kolenko, those details are always what we need to workaround some hard to find parts...

I will hold on to those LTD pipes...

PS Finally got out of the deep freeze over here....it's 28 degrees now....from 0.....

We have NO snow here in Maine "at my house".  I am getting a little concerned that the ground hog is gonna see his shadow...  although I hear most parts of the U.S. highways were closed and over three feet of snow.  Urrrgh...

UPDATE.....         The pipes for the LTD 440 and Interceptor use different header flanges and the outlet size is different (stinger that is internally welded coming out of the baffle cone not the muffler outlet!)  There is also a difference on the outlet of the Interceptor pan to clear the tie rod for the wider front skis.
