OK so here is what i have so far...
Last winter/spring, I had problems getting this pig started. I eventually got it going but it took lots of pulling. I went through carbs and fuel pump last fall and it started right up aterwards. I then replaced the primer and it wouldn't start (no spark) I got mad at it and let it sit this winter, rode the Intruder instead. I just looked it over today and here is what I found...
Swapped CDI and it had no spark. Added an aftermarket ext coil and I got spark.went back to original CDi and new coil, no spark. New CDI and old coils and no spark... One of the coils has an open when I check from plug wire to plug wire (bad coil)
Checked output from the internal coils and they seem to be within specs.
The CDI I have that works has a 3 wire connection for the coil, the old CDI only had 2 wires (dual coils)
Question: Do I need to find a CDI with the 2 wires for the coils or can I make up a set of new coils using the 3 wire setup?? Thw 2 wire CDI looks bigger than the 2 wire one. The larger CDI was on the sled when I got it, the smaller CDI is one I had laying around and neither has any visible part numbers.

P.S.... the wife wants to know why I am working on a snowmobile when it is all done snowing outside..... DUH!!! it is because it is not 10 below and snowing out!!! besides, I got all summer to get parts...

Is the small one the same as an Invader CDI ?
If it is you can make it work but I believe the timing curve will be slightly diferent.

Looking through my 1980 invader/4/6 manual. I see the larger CDI is for the 4/6 motor. Guess I need to find one that works.
On the plus side, I know the internal coils are OK.... anybody got a set of external coils and a CDI for a 4/6??

I think I've got an extra set. I'll take a look tonight and let ya know.

Thanks!!

I have a CDI for the 4/6 (large box) BUT the "white wire" has been clipped. I don't know what the white wire controls, but the box is available if you find the white wire is not a must. Wire was clipped close to the box so you wouldn't be able to tie into it.

I believe I have parts on the way, but I'll keep it in mind. Looks like the white wire goes to the pulser coil so it is needed.

Good luck!

** UPDATE**
I got the parts installed today, sounds like I have spark. I figured out that when you disconnect the fuel pulse hose, then forget to re-attach it, the sled doesn't run too good.....Seems like now it is running on one cylinder....Left exhaust pipe started smoking (probably flooded a bit) but the right side seems like it is cold. I tried changing one of the coil wires on each cylinder but I got too tired of pulling the rope.
At least I now have spark, which is an improvement!!
** just a thought, I may have a plugged exhaust (??) something to check out I guess..**
