We are assembling an Intruder engine using a 82 crank. Looking at my 79 manual it shows inserting the shim on the inside of the mag end center bearing. It didn't really want to go there, there was much more space on the inside of the PTO side center bearing. After sealing up the case and flipping it over, the counterweights do not look like they are perfectly centered in the openings in the top half of the case. Does anyone know whether they changed the location of the shim on the 82 engines?

Here is a photo showing more gap on the PTO side than on the mag side.

Nice Mark,
I would measure to see if the connecting rod is centered. Push this way measure, push that way measure. Counter weights I would expect need not perfectly centered.
Interesting question. Snow coming soon.

The shim goes between the bearing and the thrust washer next to center seal on the mag side. The idea is to shift the crank toward the flywheel side. It's all covered in the service manual.

Mark, thanks for the suggestion. It would appear that the rods are centered on the bore. Either I have never looked closely before or this crank is an abberation.
