Title: Drifter F/A 540cc
Post by: kwc on September 20, 2017, 11:06:20 AM
Hi guys - just putting the finishing touches on my latest sled project and I thought I would share the results.  I have always loved the looks of the F/A's since I was a kid, but wanted to add a little more power.   The sled I started with was straight, but everything  missing under the hood.

Can't wait for snow!

changes:
- 540 SRV engine and exhaust
- 36mm flat slide carbs / 98 VMAX 500
- Hydraulic brake / Ski Doo REV
- 121" Camoplast Hacksaw track, 1" lug

Nice!   I have a 1" Hacksaw on my 81 Invader.  BEST modification I have ever done!

Wow Turned Out AWESOME.  Congrats to ya!!!   Hope mine looks half that good when done and yes they are sweet looking sleds. I am working on the back half now and will make sure seat turns out good cause the seats are what takes them sleds over the top in my opinion. Gona let mine stock for awhile tho  ;)

I saw this sled at A1, the pictures don’t do it justice, it’s super nice and well done.  You can’t tell that it didn’t come from the factory that way.  It was nice meeting you.   :)

Thank you Gixxer, it was good meeting you!

I logged quite a few shakedown runs on the Drifter back in December, made a few adjustments and all seems good.   I've never rode an F/A before building this sled and wow are they fun!  The low center and light weight makes this one of my new favorite riders.

Have a great winter guys.

Have you gotten many miles on this sled yet? I just picked up a Drifter Freire myself and I'm considering a similar project. Has the Yamaha engine worked out okay without having a fan on it anymore? Beautiful Slide by the way!

hi Motorman - I have ridden the sled hard this winter, both on trail and deep snow field riding and its working very good so far.   According to the GPS speedometer on my phone it runs 70+mph on the top end and has lots of torque for the deep snow.   The hydraulic brake sure works nice too, especially when doing some aggressive trail riding.

The engine install was fairly straight forward, but the hood modifications to widen out the spark plug bumps and back opening took a lot of work.  Also, the stock headlight wont fit with the wider 540 engine, had to use a small LED instead.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the update! I didn't see the hood mods before. I think I am going to try upgrading the little 340 first since mine is so original. I have been strongly considering something like you built, though.
