Title: I am doing something wrong. Starting and Idling
Post by: mswyka on February 20, 2018, 07:03:59 PM
It would seem that I am doing something wrong with this new project.  She starts hard and so far refuses to idle without some gentle taps on the throttle.

Granted we have not run very much fuel through her yet.  In this first tank we have mixed oil into the fuel at 40:1.

Clean carbs, new jets, air screw at 1.5 turns out

As always I am open to thoughts.

are both throttle slides approx. even at idle,i.e. one cyl pulling the other

I am not sure that I have the idle stops set correctly, but both slides are set to begin pulling off the stops at the same time.

Check your timing another thing most people use these NGK screw in caps they have a  resistor in them some spark plugs have the screw in tops which can come loose make sure they are tight or get solid tops. Hard starting can be a few things not enough fuel or timing isn't right

I use a mirror or stick my finger in each slide to see if they are about even, stop screws get flat spots, slides get hammered out, so x turns out can be off....I much prefer old style spring type plug wire ends

Thanks for the thoughts.

Plugs are NGK BR9EYA that we run in all the sleds.  Solid, non-screw ends.
Plug wire ends are stock Invader with the spring wire coil

I have not double checked the timing

CDI is aftermarket.  We are in bad shape for good condition OEM CDIs

Had a chance to spend a little time with the sled this afternoon.  In that time, after many too many pulls on the start rope I have reaffirmed the benefits of electric start.

Primed she will now putter a little bit.  A shot of starting fluid will get a deep throated roar out of her.  But then nothing.  It appears now that the fuel pump has ceased pumping.  So we have another item to check out.

More to come.

Hard to start, idling problems, fuel pump not working...   all symptoms of an air leak in the bottom end...

Had some more time to tinker.

Added some 93 octane to cut pre-mix to 80:1.  The modified the Rube Goldberg tester to also be able to test fuel pumps.  Finally found one that would move fuel.  Loaded the new pump into the sled and we seem to be in business.

Now if we only had some snow.
