Invader runs great but idles high?
« on: January 25, 2015, 02:28:42 PM »
Hi guys, I am new here. I just got my 79 440 invader. It was sitting for sometime so I cleaned the carbs and it runs great, lots of power. It wants to idle at 4500 rpm with the track in the air.. The clutch wants to engage and takes off when on the ground.. Ive tried adjusting idle screws but doesnt seem to do anything. I have read through the forums and see that everyone recommends crank seals so I am ordering those, but Id like to ride it for a bit and if the crank seals were bad wouldnt it run rough? Thanks for any advice

Jeremy

Also thought I would mention an experience a couple weeks ago on an Invader, the lock nut on the cable adjustment came loose and removing/reinstalling the slide cap changed the throttle adjustment on one side.  My idle went way up and adjusting the idle screws made no difference.  I had been playing with needle clip positions, and thought that caused the change.  Forehead smack!!

If you are running it with bad crank seals, you are risking a melted piston.  No, it would not necessarily run rough.  As jskal said, check throttle cable adjustment.

If you don't know the history of the sled then don't run/ride it until you take care of the crank seals.  The pain of fixing an engine is not worth a few blasts across the back 40.  My gut is that the idle speed is related to something other than the crank seals.  Double check carb slide position, double check air bleed screw turns, double check enricheners are working and seating properly, double check primer is not leaking, double check impulse line is not leaking, double check that carb boots are sealed properly to the cyliner intake.

I made a pressure tester for under $20 at Menards.  2" rubber caps, 1 1/4" pvc plugs, and a low pressure gauge from the plumbing dept.  Crank seals in Kawi's are a common problem, but not always the source.  This helped me get some clarity when tracking down my issues with an Invader & LTD.  I believe the target is holding 5 psi for 20 minutes or so.  (Don't overinflate or you'll blow the seals out)

adjust throttle cables down 2 turns to ensure the slides can go down to the idle speed screws,.....then do the crank  seals before it burns down :-X

Ok thanks guy. I am just going to do the seals for now as per everyones advice lol! The sled has low mileage and really good compression so I have a good machine to restore and dont want to risk meltdown!  I am sure there is a good crank seal how to somewhere on this site..

Thanks again
