Forgot to oil the bearings
« on: October 21, 2015, 01:27:54 PM »
I was at work over the weekend and was changing crank seals on an Invader 440 I've had sitting for awhile. Unfortunately, I got distracted by customer phone calls right after applying honda bond to the crankcase and forgot to oil the bearings. The crankcase is assembled but the heads are still off. Is there anyway to oil them without taking the crankcase apart again? Also the manual didn't say what type of oil to use, what should I use?

Dump a tablespoon full of two stroke oil in each side (assuming the cylinders are still off too), set it on its left side and spin the crank, set it on its right side and spin the crank.  That should oil the bearings.

Did you remember to grease the seals?

We keep a trigger pump oil can on the work bench filled with two stroke oil.  Keeps the work bench neat while keeping the oil handy for lubing the engine parts as they go together.

Are you talking about the main crank bearings or the piston and rod needle bearings?  Like Gix said, if you put some oil in the intake and tip the engine around a bit you should get the oil where it needs to be.

I think that it is a good idea to run an oil rich mixture during break-in any time the engine has been apart.

I always run a 40:1 mix for the first tank of gas.  It's really smokey, but you don't need to worry so much about those little bubbles in the oil lines.   8)

Maybe 1 more thing to add to this.  Like Gixxer6 said, put a little oil down each side of the case and tilt the motor to get some oil to the bearings.  Then hook an oil line up to the oil pump, next find a socket that fits the flywheel nut and put it in a drill and spin the motor until you get good oil flow coming from the oil injectors and down into the cylinder.  Last couple motors I did I used this to make sure the oil system was primed.  It may also help get some oil to the bearings.
