Kawasaki Drifter 340 F/A Wont shut off
« on: November 24, 2015, 05:44:02 AM »
My machine will start first pull but will not shut off with key or kill switch.  Tried cleaning the connectors on the engine. and the key.

Some where a connector is not working.  You will need to check each one.

I did check the main connector on the engine with the meter and both sides are working fine. I am thinking a ground issue somewhere. There are three points to the ground on the sled and two out of the three are grounded.  The ground coming off the voltage regulator does not show a ground.  Have checked the wire on both ends and its fine.  below is a link to the wiring diagram and you can see that the wire makes its way to engine connector.

I think the ground for the Voltage Regulator would only matter to the lighting circuit, not the ignition.
The gray and black wires at the 1st Engine Connector coming from the CDI.....all they have to do is touch together and the engine should shut off. That is what the key switch or the kill switch does, in the off position...it simply connects the black ignition wire to the gray ground wire to ground out the ignition.
If the connections are all good, what about the ground point shown on the wiring diagram just below the CDI....and the Ground for the CDI itself?
Lastly, if that is all good, one of those wires could be broken inside the insulation....Or...it's pretty rare, the CDI may have failed internally and will not shut off the ignition..? Some Arctic Cats with Suzuki engines had that problem with their CDI's.

thanks.  Will poke around on the weekend with the meter and see what I find

I think I would try this....Use some needle nosed pliers with insulated handles...or a piece of insulated electrical wire that you strip both ends.
Unplug that 1st connector at the engine. With the engine running, touch together the terminals (on the engine side connector) that correspond to the gray and the black wires....that has to kill the engine.
If it doesn't, then we know it is in the black or gray wires from the Engine to the connector, the ground, or the CDI is bad.
If it does kill the engine...the problem must still be in the connections or wires from that connector to the kill switch---key switch.
It is possible that both your kill switch and key switch are bad.
If you have a multimeter you could check for the change in continuity when you flip them from run to off.
The terminals to check on the key switch are "G" and "M'.
Good luck...let us know how it goes.

Black wire to ground stops the motor.  Emergency stop switch and key switch grounds the black wire.

This grounding shuts off the power to the cdi.  Cdi and lighting coils are independent.  Voltage regulator only regulates the power from the lighting coil.

Plier solution sounds zapping and works ;).  Looking at spark plugs, pulled from cylinders and grounded then you can see grounding the black wire prevents the pretty blue arching across the plugs.

I checked on the weekend the wires on the engine side seems to be hardwired.  The connector on the side of the skidoo can be removed
