Should I do it all again? Sleeves?
« on: February 15, 2013, 12:25:33 PM »
After just rebuilding our 1980 JD liquifire kawasaki 440 I was in need of an air box so I asked a neighbor with the same model not in running condition. Surprisingly, he said not only could I have the airbox, but I could have the whole sled! Now I'm wondering if it's worth bringing this one back to life. He snagged a hose underneath off the radiator which leaked the coolant and seized it up years ago.  He originally had intentions of rebuilding the engine and even had a shop sleeve the cylinders but never put it back together. He also gave me a box of parts from denniskirk with two brand new LeMan brand piston and ring sets. The part numbers are r-09-689. I am just wondering how these rings would stand up to the sleeves (likely LA sleeve Co ones, made of "an alloy of carbon chrome, and molybdenum of 200 brinell hardness".) Does anyone have experience with this combination? These rings definitely aren't chrome but could be nitrite coated. Neither company could give me a direct answer as the rings are made to work with OEM.

This is infomation from Wiseco:

All Wiseco rings can be used in cast iron, nickel ceramic platings (Nikasil), boron composite, and Electrofusion bores.
CAUTION: Unless otherwise noted, Wiseco rings can NOT be used in chrome plated bores. Engine damage will occur.
*CSM & CDM rings are designed to be used in chrome bores.

CSM:  Nodular iron, phosphate coated, internally notched
(for use in • Chrome Bores)
CDM:  Nodular iron, phosphate coated, internally notched
(for use in • Chrome Bores)

Weisco does have both steel and chrome rings I remember from the last build where I used Weisco's. Problem is that they say not to use any other brand piston with their rings or vice versa. I want to use what I have on hand if possible, which are the LeMan (parts unlimited company) pistons and rings. If that works I guess the next challenge would be trying to get head gaskets to seal properly on the sleeved jugs. I've heard that can be harder than hell.
