79 Intruder Now Running. Question about break in oil.
« on: November 30, 2012, 12:14:46 PM »
I got the Intruder put back together and running. Put in new seals (old ones completely shot) pistons, rings etc.
In the Kawasaki repair manual they recommend after a complete tear down to run 5 gallons of premix at 40:1 through it. I put clear lines on the injector pump, got all the lines bled and have oil going to the motor from the pump. The thing Kawasaki is not clear about is if you should be running the premix and the injector or just run the premix until that is gone and then put oil in the reservoir and switch to injectors only.
Seems to me if you are running premix and the injectors, it is going to be quite rich for a while.

I beleive the intention is for it to run rich for one tank.

I would run the premix and the oil injection for the first while.

I would put 5 gal of premixed gas and run the oil injection till you needed to add more gas and then add straight gas.

Run the premix and the injection. The intention is to make sure the injection is working properly and using the proper amount of oil and all lines are free of air. The premix just gives you the oil you need to lubricate the engine in case the injection is not working properly. At 50:1 you should be using 16ox of oil to your 5 gal of gas so make sure you fill the oil tank to start with so you know how much you have used when you top it back off. And with the premix, you are actually leaning it out a little as there is less fuel coming into the carbs as some of it is oil that doesn't burn as well as the gas. It's going to smole a lot more than normal for the first tank.
