79 intruder 440 throttle slide cutaway size
« on: March 28, 2015, 04:04:27 PM »
Pulled slides out and found them to be 3.0 cutaway, manual say's 2.5. This machine is Canadian, does that make a difference on what size slides were used.
Previous owner said the machine is all original.
what gives .......... help!
Thanks, Frank

Welcome to the site!!  79 Intruder carbs are marked  L32/141 and R32/140.  Check that so we can make sure you do have original carbs and go from there.

Wow, that is kinda weird...I guess I would verify all of the jetting (main, pilot, needle jet and jet needle, econo jet) are stock since you have access to the manual....Can't think that there would have been any variations to the stock 2.5 slide cutaway...
If the slide cutaway is the only difference, you can probably bump up the pilot jet slightly from the stock 25 to maybe a 30. The larger cutaway allows a bit more air into the motor from idle up to about 25 percent throttle opening. If you have a slight lean bog at initial acceleration, that increase to the pilot jet would help cure that.
Still...doesn't explain why your sled has 3.0 slides???
I looked at the '78 Intruder manual also to compare. It had slightly richer jetting, but the cutaway was the same as the '79.....2.5. Dunno?

I dunno either????. carb jetting is all stock. Previous owner said he's owned it since new, and verified that it ran perfect 5 yrs. ago when he stopped riding.
I haven't ran it yet as the carb boots are toast, will have new boots hopefully tomorrow.
These 3.0 carb slides are heavy brass with chrome coating, is this correct ?.
Will also be doing the seals,........... are the winderosa seals any good?
Great site, so thanks again.

You may hear varying opinions on Winderosa gasket kits. I can only comment on my experience using them in most of my sleds over many years. I have had excellent luck with them.
