How to drain fluid from crankcase
« on: March 11, 2015, 06:51:17 PM »
Last week I blew a head gasket, drove about a mile to get closer to a road, while watching the temp gauge.  I dragged the sled home with my wife on her Polaris.  Now I replaced the head gasket, cleaned all the studs & and got new nuts and lock washers.  Now I am ready to fire it up but the piston is coughing up lots of white foam.  It bucks a couple times but never really fires up.  I removed the plugs took the propane torch to dry the plugs and just showed the flame to the plug hole.  BOOM  it shot fire from the cylinders.  I have repeated this procedure many times with the same result.  My arm is getting longer from pulling on this stupid thing.  If only there was case drain plugs, this would be easy.

Did you pull the impulse line off the crankcase (case to pump)?   Pull the plugs and crankcase line and keep pulling until you don't see anymore fuel/water spitting out of the crankcase impulse fitting.   Only other option IMO is pull the engine and flip engine over.  Sorry, no easy solution.  No drain plug for the case, only for the coolant.  The white substance you see is water mixing with oil.  You probably had a little bit of oil in the case and the antifreeze mixed with it when you blew a head gasket.  Crankcase pressure should blow out most of the water...  just be patient my man!  It shouldn't be hard to pull once the plugs are removed.  Invite someone over for a beer and have them take a turn pulling it over. lol.     Tory

I will give that a spin tonight.  Also was thinking of flooding the bottom case with 2 stroke oil to clean the crank.  Good or Bad?

I wouldn't flood the case w/oil.  It will be harder to blow the oil out than the antifreeze/water.  A very small amount of oil in the case is o.k., but too much will cause problems.  When you think you've done the best you can...  put the plugs back in, hook up the wires and disconnect the carburetors.  Yep that's right...  no carburetors.  If you pull it over and the engine wants to run with no carbs, then you haven't removed all the fuel in the case.  There will be some "fuel blow by" past the rings under compression if there is any fuel left in the case.  The plugs will ignite that excess fuel.    Tory

Well I been trying different methods.  I tried opening the throttle and plugging the muffler, shop-vac on the spark plug hole.  It sucked out some fluids, but not enough to get it running.  Still lots of foam.  Today I poured 1/2 cup of diesel fuel into each carb as I was stroking it.  When the fluid started to shoot out of the plugs I let it sit a few minutes, then gave it about 30 good pulls.  It was a geyser. Now I put in dry plugs. It's almost running now.  It kicks and coughs for a 4-5 seconds than stalls.  My arms are dead, but I'm winning this battle.
