We have a 79 Intruder.  It has been a fairly reliable sled until the past few years when it has refused to go over 30 miles per hour.

Engine checks out fine.  Carbs check out fine - and have actually been replaced at one point.

The latest theory is a warped brake disk.  We had a problem last winter where the brakes locked up.  Thought we had the problem licked when we repaired the brakes - but still no good.

Today we swapped out the brake disk - photo attached.  Now we are waiting for snow.

Have you experienced the sloppy key ways also ?
I have couple invaders and both brake setups are extremely sloppy.  Haven't looked into them yet.  Idk if the key is shot or where the key goes into the jackshaft is bad.  Just curious what you have seen or fixed.  I'll get to mine someday lol.  -Mike

We have a couple sleds with sloppy keys.  We have never noticed that sloppiness slowing them down at all.  This particular sled was on the extreme side of slow. 

As far as sloppiness, my sense is that there needs to be some play so that the disc can slide on the shaft.  It does not need to move much, but it does need to move as the pads wear.
