Homemade flywheel puller?
« on: December 16, 2012, 01:24:44 PM »
Hi all - turns out I need to change the crank seals on my 1982 LTD motor and I see in the manual that there is a special tool needed to pull the flywheel. Has anyone found a way to pull the flywheel without this special tool? I would like to do this today and don't want to wait for a puller. If I absolutely need one, can someone show me where I can find a puller like this? Thanks!

I made my own puller.  I used a 3/8" thick piece of plate steel, a large fine thread bolt and nut, and three smaller high grade bolts.  I drilled one large hole in the center of the plate, and three smaller holes that align with the holes in the flywheel.  This works quite well, and is very cheap to do.

Check with a local car parts place, many of them rent out tools,The puller you need can also be used to pull steering wheels, and vibration dampeners, however you will need some grade 8 bolts to thread into the flywheel.

Some flywheels come off very hard and it may take a heavy duty puller to do the trick

Thanks! I read your post right after I was done building my puller and laughed to myself as it was pretty much exactly what you had described.
