invader 440 breaking up and bogging when air temp rises
« on: March 11, 2013, 03:21:29 PM »
Took my last fishing trip of the year in northern NH this weekend. went up with a few guys who planned on riding all weekend on thier brand new machines. Got a chance to do some night riding, and the sled was loving the cold air. Had no problems keeping up with brand new $12,000 polaris and ski doo 800's on the tight trails. In any case, during the day, it was breaking up and bogging past 1/3 or 1/2 throttle, any time I ran it for an extended period of time, especially when the air temp hit the fifties. As long as I was moving, my water temp didnt pass 140, but the engine temp really didn't seem to be related to the issue. It seemed to me that it was a fuel delivery issue. Maybe water in my fuel pump. I haven't gotten a chance to dig into it yet, but I was wondering if anything sounded tell tale from the symptoms. It seemed as though when it was the worst, it was getting oil, but not fuel. It smoked when i would give it throttle, but wouldn't build RPM's. I would let it sit until the air temp dropped, and it would run flawlessly.

50 degrees??? wow,,, thats like ride in shorts & t-shirt weather...

what elevation are you at???

my guess is you're jetted too rich... higher elevations and/or high air temps need leaner main jets...

my 440 invader is jetted a little rich... runs like a beast when its 30 degrees or less,,, spits and sputters at high rpm at anything above 30... iirc,, i have 150 mains and im at about 1000' (36's,, twin aaen's,, non ported motor)

Ya, it was a really weird weekend here in the northeast. I left southern nh with blizzard conditions and 14" of snow (and still falling) at 4:30 am on friday. I headed north, and by 7:30 I was on dry pavement where it had not snowed at all. The trails in pittsburg nh were pretty bare. I had the elevation thought, but then I remembered that it had happened once before back home, after my first trail ride on this sled. After about an hour of riding, it started doing the same thing. With that being said, pittsburg is 1,000'  higher than where i live (1,322'). That could've been part of it.
