80 invader flooding problem
« on: January 20, 2014, 08:48:58 PM »
Hey,

My 80 invader 440 keeps flooding on one carb. First it was the mag side carb. Gas would pour out until it stalled. I took both carbs apart. They are set up as stock. I checked the floats and inlet needle valves. They look good with no grooving in the needle seats. I adjusted the float arms so they are parallel with the carb bowl mounting surface. I adjusted the choke(enricher) cable per the manual. I'm not using the air box until I get this figured out. The only non-stock part is a new Mikuni fuel pump installed by the previous owner. Can anyone help me with this annoying problem. Could the choke plungers be not seating properly or leaking?

If it's flooding while running, pull the plungers out and inspect the bottom of them.  The bottoms are rubber and made to seal.  I have seen these split and leak.

If it's flooding when it's not running, the non-stock fuel pump could be the problem.  The stockers have an anti siphon valve built in that prevents fuel from siphoning from the tank.  Also check the impulse line that runs from the fuel pump to the crank case, if there is fuel in it, the pump might be bad...

The pump may not have an anti siphon valve in it as the original one did. I have also had a diaphragm tear and fill my whole motor and exhaust with fuel.

"Gas would pour out until it stalled." sounds like it is doing this while it is running, so that rules out the fuel pump. Make sure you have Mikuni needle and seats, and make sure they are rated at 1.2 for the flow. Also it is possible for the floats to be full of gas and no longer 'float' drop them in a cup of gas and see if the  do float. If they sink even a bit, they may not do the job.
Also I had a carb that the floats were put in upside down. the pin should be on the top side.

the pin should be on the top side.

Maybe double check this.  Pretty sure pins are on the bottom.

On the last set of Mikuni's I was working on, the floats had "UP" in raised letters on the top side of the floats.  I didn't pay attention to the pins, but made sure the "UP" was towards the top of the carb (as it sits when installed on the engine).

flooding out the vent hose is a fuel level issue..ie needle and seat, float, etc
