setting alignment
« on: November 19, 2014, 11:58:01 AM »
Need help... In what order should I align things?   U had sled tore to bare tunnel. Should I set drive shaft and jack shaft.. then make motor parallel to jack shaft then align clutches and finally set offset?

Offset needs to be set first, then clutch alignment.  You are not going to get the motor to jackshaft relationship "perfect".  You will need to add or remove the aluminum spacer shims on the mag side of the motor when working with the jackshaft/motor relationship.  It is important that the jackshaft  itself is adjusted forward or back by loosening "both" the chaincase assembly (bolts) AND the pillow block bolts (2) on the drive side.  Adjusting movement of the jackshaft on only one side places a high load on the jackshaft bearing.  Hope this makes sense.  Easier to show than explain for me.

I have center to center set at 12.00" and offset set at .588"   how do I set parallelism between the motor and jack shaft.   As in where do I need to take measurements??

What I do with all my sleds is take a 2 foot long piece 3/8 inch square stock aluminum or steel. Just make sure it is new and straight. I open up my secondary just enough to slip this square stock between the two faces in the lower portion of the secondary, just make sure it sits flat and not on a rivet. Now let the secondary close and pinch the square stock to keep it in place. The remainder of the square stock is positioned so it just sits on the bottom of the primary where the belt would sit.
From there measure the distance from front and rear edge of the fixed sheave of the primary, to the edge of the square stock. Measurements should be the same if engine and secondary are parallel to each other.

Well after getting things aligned. Got things as close as I could with a tape measure. . Not sure if this is an issue or I have things really good but with the engine running, the secondary and the belt would turn slowly causing track slowly to spin... I know on newer sleds if track is aligned properly the it will do that ever so slowly at an idle.  Sled is elevated on a stand
