Intruder Tach Question
« on: February 07, 2015, 09:12:20 AM »
We have a 79/80 vintage Intruder that was assembled from the ground up from parts.  When we first put it together it would run fine cold, idle high warm and not shut down when warm.  After some inspection we found that due to a bad engine ground we fried the stator ground wire when using the electric start.

It now has new stator plate and runs and starts fine.  However the tach will not register.   Swapped in a different tach today with the same results.  And, it almost seemed like the needle would go down very slightly when the engine was running.  thoughts?

Voltage before starting read 12.5, after starting read 12.3.

This would lead me to believe that the battery is not charging.  Swap in a new regulator?

The tach is a pulse counter.  I would suspect the rectifier.

(You know this but for anyone else) make sure it is for an electric start sled. The manual start sleds use a different regulator.

an extra ground from engine to chassis is never a bad idea
