Fuel tank threads.

 I still have the receipt stuck in one of my service manuals when I ordered a new tank in 1992.
 Yes, I managed to crack the threads on the original tank....duhhhh...another Homer Simpson moment!
 After trying every glue, sealant, epoxy, known to the industrialized world, I gave up and ordered a new tank.
 1992....long before "Kawasakitrax", long before Image Enterprise had their clever repair kit...long before eBay.....never thought about using a section of PVC pipe to reinforce the neck.
 I distinctly remember Clem's son telling me at the counter when I picked the new tank up....." I think you're getting one of the last of these tanks that are still in inventory."
 112 bucks?? I must have been rich back in those days.
 Ahh...I have treated this tank with a great degree of " respect" ever since.
If the rubber gasket in the fuel cap is in good shape, all you have to do is gently snug it down....Whoodathunk??   and....so far, so good!

When ridding hard, even with the rubber gasket, they do manage to leak a little when the tank is full....

Lol.  Since extra fuel slows me down I rarely fill any of my tanks over 1/2 full.  I did however fill my 4/6 last winter (cracked filler neck) and ended up trashing a pair of jeans and my favorite overalls!  They made good fire starters when I got home...  just threw em' in the stove!

LOL....same for me, filled the tank once on the 550......haven't done it since.......

I personnaly like the smell of high octane fuel but the wife says otherwise.....stripping down naked outside below zero isn't my thing.....getting too old for that...

With an uncracked filler neck, OEM gas cap, and OEM rubber gasket, I can fill my tank full, ride hard, and not leak a drop. 

I did have the threads of the cap crack once...nothing worse than a crotch full of gas.  :/

You got me thinking Gixxer6......maybe there is a hairline fracture somewhere on that Image kitted tank neck or the cap itself..  ....?

I've changed the gasket (NOS) a few times with the same results........small leaks.......

One thing tough, i have a bad habit of ''not'' screwing down the cap far enough.....they crack too easily on the top.....

And when that happened with my first ''K'' cap.....it made me switch too NOS ''Non K'' caps for good....

As per woman liking gas smelling crotches.....i'm with you Tory, never found either...

I fought with that silly cap for a couple rides.  It had me baffled, I checked, double checked, and triple checked the threads on the tank.  I replaced the cap gasket with NOS.  The I FINALLY found the crack in the cap threads.  Now I only use NOS caps and gaskets.  I dated a girl that liked the smell of race fuel, but it sure does sting...
