Crank seals

I’m dealing on an interceptor that has been sitting for 26 years with 1600 original miles. My question is, do the crank seals on the interceptors break down like the ones on the invaders? Do you interceptor guys out there think I should change them before I try to bring it back to life?

My opinion, for what it is worth, change the crank seals right away.  This will remove any question about whether any other operational problems may or may not be related to the seals.

 Yes, I agree...absolutely.
I cannot say if there is any difference with the Interceptor engine seals being less prone to failure...never owned one, dang it.   ;)
But, I acquired a 1982 SkiDoo Blizzard 9500 3 1/2 years ago, and a 1981 Scorpion Sidewinder late last summer.
It is a pain in the neck, but I pulled the engines from both, even though they both ran well.
These things are approaching 40 years of age.
I'm glad I did take the time to tear into the engines. The seals were getting dried out and some small cracks were evident. The tiny springs on the inside of the seals that maintains pressure against the crankshaft were looking a little tired.
 I may seize a piston in one of them, but it won't be due to bad crank seals.
I last replaced the seals in my '79 Invader in 2010.....I need to build a homemade pressure tester someday.... 8)
As rare as parts (pistons, cylinders) are for an Interceptor......absolutely take the time.

IMO, it’s an absolute must.  I wouldn’t run it until they are replaced, especially on a 550.  They might last hundreds of miles, and they might last hundreds of feet, they are a ticking time bomb...  Not worth the risk!

If I get it I will change the seals first thing. Thanks to all you guys for always answering all the questions that are put forward. It is amazing the wealth of knowledge that all you have to offer.
