Oil and Water Pump Question
« on: March 30, 2019, 07:26:28 PM »
I have my 340 Invader engine tore down for a top end and crank seal replacement. Should I leave the water and oil pumps be? I have no reason to believe they are not in good working order or vise versa. Thanks

The mounting bolts for the oil pump will need to be loosened, and at least one will need to be removed to split the crankcase so that the crank seals can be replaced. With one bolt out, and the other loose, it might be better to take the assembly off so that it can be fully inspected and cleaned.

The crankshaft will need to come out to replace the crank seal on the PTO side.  I don't know of any way to pull the oil pump gear with the crank left in place.

Thanks for the feedback. I was under the impression I didnt need to split the crack to replace the seals. It appears I was again way off.

I always fill the oil pump with oil on the bench at let it set overnight to check for leaks.  I’ve had a few leak and it’s almost impossible to change with the engine in the chassis.  An easy test that can save a lot.

My experiences; no issues with the oil pumps, they have performed flawless on my invaders.

Water pumps tho, Right now, I and some other Kawi friends have had the water pump start leaking and you loose your coolant. This was due to bearing failure. To access the pump, most folks pull the whole engine out because of its location. Kinda a pain. >:(
I pulled a used pump off another engine only to find the bearing rusted up and did not turn freely. Don't know any other tests to check the pumps capability. I would like to know also, anyone else do tests or rebuild a water pumps?

For changing the PTO seal, here is a pic pulling the oil gear.

We have been blessed to not yet have  water pump failure.  However I will admit to being guilty of shipping some old pumps that turned out to be leakers.  Found The Flying Dutchman, water-pump-rebuilders.com who have fixed a few for others.  For what it is worth,  couple of photos of a pump are attached.

Also, some gear pullers have jaws that are too large to fit behind the drive gear.  When that happens we use a bearing splitter to pull the gear.

Got the gear off with a puller. Of course it didn't fit, nor did the 2 cheap ones I thought might. I was able to get the puller to grip on the old seal behind the gear and thought I may be able to get it that way. I ended up literally pulling the old seal over the gear with the puller, 1/2 at time as it was split, and then I was able to use the puller as I thought it would work originally. I have found you have to get creative during this. Now I can concentrate on putting on the new seals after cleaning up the crank and case, and then finally completing the top end. Its now completely tore down and I couldnt have done it without this site. What a journey thus far. Thanks for everyone's assistance helping a guy who has never done anything like this.

Is this an excessive amount of buildup around the seal? What is recommended for cleaning?

I always cut the old seal off before pulling the gear.

Yes that looks like quite a bit of buildup.  Looks like it’ll clean up though.

What is your preferred method of cutting off the old seal Gixxer6? I will be doing this for sure when I get to the 440 seals.

I think the easiest way I have found is to use tin snips.
