Clutch removal
« on: February 11, 2021, 09:54:26 AM »
I finally received the clutch puller for my 4/6.  The sled has a 102 on it but I read some old posts that indicated it would take the same puller as a stock clutch.  The puller threads in but it will not pop the clutch I have even tried the water trick with no luck.  I am starting to notice the puller threads are starting to deteriorate and it doesn’t look like the end is making contact with anything.  Any ideas or can someone confirm the length of the puller for the stock clutch.  This thing is really starting to be a PITA, but I guess I should have known better.

I don’t believe the stock puller will work on the comet.  The 80’ Liquifire has the same engine as the Invader but came with a 102 right from Deere, try finding a puller for the Liquifire and it should work.

I think I messed up the clutch threads.  I’m going to try and find the proper tap to see if I can get them back to usable.  Is your two piece puller the one with the same diameter shaft the entire length or is it the one with the step down in size mid length?  I searched for a JD specific puller but was unsuccessful.

The Comet tool is 3/4-16 thread  and the Kawasaki clutch is 18 mm  X  1.5 mm.  If you use a tap to clean out the treads in you clutch the material is gone.  Get the Comet tool and use it to push the material back into place but be sure to use a lot of lube like a "never seize" and don't use too much force.

The picture has the Comet clutch tool above the Kawasaki clutch tool.  There are also a couple busted end mills from making clutch alignment tools.

Hopefully the threads aren't messed up too bad...Those clutches come off HARD...

I was looking around over on the JD site and the post I was reading indicated the clutch threads were 3/4-16.  I went down to fastenal and picked up a grade 8 with those threads and it threaded in pretty good.  I filled it up with water again and tightened the bolt so my hope is when the water freezes it will pop.  I found a two piece puller like the one in the pick above but they indicate the threads are 3/4-16 and not 19mm.

19 mm  X  1.6  mm and 3/4-16 are nearly identical and since the Comet is USA made it is likely the 3/4-16.  The 1.6  mm pitch is .06304 and the 16 TPI pitch is .0625.  Very close.  I re checked the pitch gauge and it was 1.6 instead of 1.5.  My eyes tricked me.

I was able to get the clutch off using the bolt I got and water(ice).  Thank you Mother Nature.  Now I just need to get the temp sensor off and I should be good to go.

I never use water. Put grease into the hole then put your puller in if need be lightly tap the end when it pops off you got a mess to clean
