Drive shaft removal on 78 Invader
« on: November 23, 2020, 09:57:32 PM »
How do you fully remove the drive shaft off the Invader? I've pulled the chain case and the other end of the drive shaft is in a bearing that looks to be seated in the bulkhead? I tried heating the drive shaft up with a torch but I still can't get it out, the service manual I have doesn't really address removal of the drive shaft from the bearing or whether I can take the driveshaft out with the bearing in place. Hoping someone can tell me what to do. Attached pictures of where I'm at.

You'll need to release the collar by using a drive punch and twisting it on the shaft.  Then you should be able to push the driveshaft out of the bearing.  If it's on there too tight, you can use a bearing puller just be careful that you don't bugger up the drive insert for the speedo drive...

The collar is on the driveshaft inside the tunnel correct? I removed the set screw but it is still tight on the driveshaft. I was able to hammer the driveshaft from the chaincase side and it pushed out through the bearing on the opposite side which allowed me to get the chaincase off and then I figured I could hammer it the opposite way but I can’t get it to come out of that bearing. How is that bearing secured in the bulkhead? And is there a way to remove the driveshaft with the bearing still on it?

No, the bearing must be removed.  Here is a video on how to install a locking collar, you just need to reverse this procedure to remove it.  The locking collar is on the inside, it's the piece that you took the set screw out of.

Ok, so the bearing will remain in the bulkhead? And the drive shaft will need to slide out of the bearing towards the chain case side to be removed? If so then I'm stuck cause right now that drive shaft is tightly seated in that bearing and will not move. I'm not sure what loosening the locking collar will do to help me remove it once the chain case is removed as the locking collar would only prevent me from moving it away from the chain case side? I feel like maybe I"m missing something

You are.  The locking collar LOCKS the inner race of the bearing to the shaft.  With this locked, the bearing will not move on the shaft in any direction.  Loosen the locking collar, then push the shaft towards the chain case side of the sled.  I use a large wooden dowel to drive the shaft out of the bearing.  IF the bearing is extra stubborn, you will need to use a bearing puller to remove it.

Got it! Ended up having to use a bearing puller but it’s off!
