80 LTD piston question
« on: April 10, 2021, 08:36:56 PM »
Hi guys, I am rebuilding my LTD motor 4/6 and when I tore down the previous owner must’ve put a piston and gasket kit in it ..two different pistons in this ;one piston top ring is upside down L-shaped at the top ,the piston pins are at 6o’clock and 4 o’clock and the other piston is at 12 o’clock and 2 o’clock and it’s not L-shaped..
Any input would be greatly appreciated or pictures I’m also looking to buy one piston and possibly a cylinder please PM me if you like .

Invader and 4/6 pistons are the same except for the ring end gap locations.  The top rings that style are called a "dykes" rings if I remember correctly. Not sure why they called it that.  Many have just used Invader piston and I have heard of too many problems from doing that but it still a second choice in my mine.

Invader piston is one the left---4/6 on the right.  A genuine 4/6 piston is # 13001-3011 and when new will have a coating to assist with the break in of a new engine.

The real ones are very hard to find.  The only real difference is the ring location pin between the Invader and the 4/6 pistons but that is little help.  I hope to retire from from my normal day job next year and hope to have time to make some of the odd ball items.  Wish me luck!

Just to throw a curve into your search
The aftermarket SPI pistons for an Invader may or may not have the pins in the correct spot for a 4/6.

I have tried different ones.    Some the ring ends don't travel over the ports   some they do.
